Fruit Picking With Kids

Do you have a special summer tradition you share with your family? We have lots of holiday traditions, but until recently we didn’t have any summer ones. Well, fruit picking is our new summer gem! Last week, we decided to go strawberry picking and our daughter LOVED it. Thanks to Daniel Tiger, Izzy is now interested in enchanted gardens and fruit picking. When I told her we were going strawberry picking, she was thrilled. I wish you could have seen her strutting up and down the aisles with her basket in hand. She was in heaven. Izzy was seriously so proud of herself for picking, carrying and washing off each strawberry.

Although we love going to the park and taking a dip in the pool, strawberry picking was a new fun way for us to appreciate summer. It was also a very low key learning experience. I’m a fan of letting kids be kids and allowing Izzy plenty of time to play. That being said, we talked about plants, how strawberries grow and the fact that a strawberry is a fruit without it feeling forced. It was a natural part of our conversation. She also loved making the strawberry pancakes when we got home. We will definitely include fruit picking in the future as part of our joyful summers. We all had a great time.

We want to thank the folks at Garnet Hill for the beautiful flower top my daughter wore fruit picking. How cute are the flower embellishments? It was the perfect floral shirt to wear to the garden.

What is your family’s summer gem? Have you been fruit picking with kids? We hear blueberries are up next and we can’t wait to make another trip to the enchanted garden 🙂 For our family, summer is all about breathing fresh air, exploring the great outdoors and tasting fresh fruits and vegetables. I noticed when my daughter is invested in picking fruits and vegetables herself she is more likely to try the food she picked. What a great way to bond as a family and have Izzy try new healthy snacks.

  1. She is such a cutie! I have a raspberry bush in my yard and I specially grow cherry tomatoes. When my granddaugher is over for a visit in the summer we hang out in the back yard picking and eating tomatoes and raspberries off the vine/bush. She is only 3 but she is already asking about doing it again this year.

    1. That is so cute! My grandparents have a raspberry bush as well and we are anxiously waiting for the fruit to be ripe enough to pick 🙂
