First Foods for Baby

I seriously can’t believe our baby boy is 4 months old already. At our recent doctor visit, our pediatrician recommended that we start solids now, ah! I immediately wanted to know what are the best foods for baby? Did you know new research is suggesting early introduction of highly allergenic foods (eggs, peanuts, fish, etc.) may actually decrease the risk of allergy?? Previously parents were told to wait to offer these foods, but studies do not show enough evidence to support waiting to introduce these foods. Check out more here.

When Izzy first started eating solids I created a chart to hang on our fridge. It helped me with grocery shopping and meal planning. I wanted to update this chart for IJ. With the new research many pediatricians are now saying have fun and try everything, no foods are off limit. Although this is exciting and so much less stressful, I still want to make good decisions when it comes to feeding IJ.

Since we are starting solids I did some research to find the best organic cereal for IJ. I know many pediatricians recommend cereal because it contains iron and iron is an essential nutrient for babies. There is much debate about the levels of iron in breastmilk and whether or not you should use iron supplementation for exclusively breastfed babies. I definitely don’t want to give IJ iron supplements so instead I want to incorporate foods with iron in his diet. Suitable baby foods with high levels of iron include: winter squash, sweet potato and grains.

During my research I came across this website from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Now I am obsessed! The EWG’s Food Scores search engine rates food products and tells you if there are any nutrition concerns, ingredient concerns or processing concerns. As Izzy got older (8-9 months) I did a lot of oatmeal and I would mix it with fruit. This time around I found Little Ducks organic cereal. They have a plain (naked) Little Duck Organics Mighty Oats and IJ loves it! It also scores well on the EWG rankings.

I like making a lot of the fruits and vegetables myself and pureeing them. When I don’t have the time I will be using Happy Baby Organic Baby Food and Earth’s Best Organic jars. Jars of veggies are convenient for on the go as are bananas and avocados! So far our baby boy seems to prefer vegetables, which seems crazy to me. It’s been a fun experience so far.

  1. One thing we would do by 7 months or so (didn’t start solids until 6) is put a little of our sauce from our food in with her purées- that way she tried new flavors and spices! Her first food was sweet potatoes- we got a bunch in our farm share and Chuck and I don’t like them so we gave them to Maria haha
