It’s amazing how much growth a baby goes through in the first year of life. Around 6 months our babies started sitting up, eating solids and exploring. As a mom I am constantly asking other people about their favorite baby essentials.
I love learning from other mothers and finding baby products that work the best!
So in this post I share my favorite feeding items, toys and sleep essentials for a 6 month old baby.

Feeding Essentials For Your 6 Month Old Baby:
Around 6 months old, babies start to eat solid food in addition to breastmilk or formula.
I like to make baby food for our kids, but I don’t want to spend hours doing so.
The Kidsme Food Feed and the Mash & Serve Bowl are so helpful in reducing time in the kitchen. We didn’t find it was necessary to buy any special baby food blenders, we just used our Vitamix or the mash & serve bowl to puree food.
With the food feeder you can add frozen or fresh avocado, banana, sweet potato, etc. I froze breastmilk with the other foods and placed it in the feeder. Our kids held it themselves and chomped on it for at least 20 minutes. Perfect at dinner time or for a teething baby.
The Mash & Serve Bowl is another feeding essential I use almost daily. It’s perfect for quickly mashing up soft foods like bananas or baked sweet potato.

Toy Essentials For Your 6 Month Old Baby:
Babies learn how to sit up and engage in “play” around this age. Six months is the perfect time to introduce stimulating toys.
We love Ikea’s Wooden Bead Roller Coaster. It’s stimulating, affordable and has play value for years to come. Babies can move the beads around the wires sitting up or during tummy time. Two other top toys are the Hape Pound and Tap Bench and the Little Tikes Piano.
At this age you can also introduce sensory play with homemade sensory bottles and bags. They are fun to watch, crinkle and shake. I used Ziplock baggies and Voss water bottles because they are BPA free. Follow our Ultimate List of Sensory Activities on Pinterest for more great sensory play ideas.
Finally, our kids always seemed to like household items better than toys! My daughter loved playing with a mixing bowl, bamboo spatula and whisk.
Sleep Essentials For Your 6 Month Old Baby:
Sleep is so important for baby and parents! Here are our sleep essentials for 6 months old.
Sleepsacks: We dressed our babies in pajamas and then placed them in a sleep sack for bed. Here is a warmer sleepsack we used for winter. We use the HALO SleepSack for the summer because it is a lighter fabric.
Mesh Crib Liner: We used the breathable baby bumper when our daughter started to roll around in her crib. I didn’t want her to get her arms and legs caught between the slats. I think the media made me paranoid of regular bumpers so a mesh crib liner was the perfect solution!
Noise Maker or Fan: Sleep is essential in our house and with two kids we knew we needed some kind of white noise to help them during naps and nighttime. All of us have these amazing noise makers in our rooms. It’s a natural soothing sound.
Video Monitor: When we first registered for our baby shower, I thought I don’t need a video monitor, that’s just a waste of money. Boy was I wrong! Our video monitor has been such a blessing to us and something I would definitely recommend to every parent. We still use it with our 3 year old.
Amazon Family Membership:
I don’t know what I would do without my Amazon Family membership. When we first had our daughter we didn’t live close to any baby stores, Target, or Wholesale Clubs. It was difficult making a trip out in this freezing weather with a baby.
Izzy also hated her car seat for the first 2-3 months of her life. Before Izzy was born I did a trial 3 month membership and I fell in love! Most of the time Amazon has the best prices and I love that I can get free 2 day shipping.
I also love reading all the reviews. Some things are better bought in person when you can touch them and feel them, but I honestly bought 80% of Izzy’s stuff from Amazon. You can join Amazon Family or try Amazon Prime for free with a 30 day trial.

My doctor recommended reading as the #1 thing to do with our baby! Start as early as newborn.
Feeding Tips For Your 6 Month Old Baby:
Have you ever wondered about the difference between baby oatmeal, steel cut oats and rolled oats? I created a post all about this and shared my favorite way to serve baby’s first oatmeal.
We also like adding spices into our homemade baby food. Here is a good list of spices to add to your baby’s meals.

Parenting Tips and Resources For Young Babies:
It’s takes a village to raise a child! Through my experiences in motherhood I’ve learned how valuable it is to have a community to support me. I am blessed to have my family nearby, but I also have an online community of support. One positive way to use Facebook is to connect with other moms and ask questions, share tips and laugh together.
Additionally, I also love hearing from readers in our comments. Please feel free to share your favorite tips and advice!
Lastly, it’s important to remember that every child is different and what works for one child may not work for the other. I’m slowly learning to become more flexible, take bits of wisdom when I can, and trust my mommy instincts. I hope you find some of these posts on Heart of Deborah helpful.
