Delight Yourself in the Lord

At the beginning of this year I started thinking about verse four in Psalm 37 (NKJV). It says “Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.” I often wondered, does that meant God will give you what you already desire? Or does it mean God will place in your heart specific desires that he will fulfill? It may be a combination of both, but either way I wanted to determine what it meant to delight yourself in the Lord.

Today I looked up the word “delight” found in psalm 37 in my concordance. According to the New Strong’s Expanded Concordance of the Bible it is the Hebrew word anag. One meaning is to be soft or pliable. I also found online that it can mean “to feel great favor toward something” (Skipmoen.com) and “to be happy about, take exquisite delight” (Biblestudytools.com).

Delight Yourself in the Lord, One mom's experience with spending time in His presence.

This winter weather has been getting to me. I have felt somewhat unmotivated, tired and lazy. I don’t like these feelings at all and when I started reflecting, I realized the days where I spent time in His presence I felt better. It’s my fleshly desire to think I can do this myself, I don’t have time to read the Bible or sing. But in reality, I need my Savior. He brightens my day, He is my strength and my hope. He changes the atmosphere of my home. I so often delight myself in pleasures of this world: food, television, shopping, crafting, etc. But the Bible tells us to also delight ourselves in our creator.

To me delighting yourself in the Lord means spending time in His presence by reading His word and singing His praises. I’m sure God loves when we are joyful about spending time with Him. As a parent I feel great joy when Izzy wants my attention, love and affection. Don’t you think God feels the same way about His children? Sometimes I don’t always “feel” like it, but as soon as I put on worship music and start singing I notice a shift in the atmosphere. My flesh is weak, but my spirit awakens when I spend time with Jesus. Recently, I have been enjoying the song Overwhelmed by Big Daddy Weave. Click the image below to watch the video.
