Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Curly Hair Care For Kids

“Ahh guys, quick! Look at this curl. LOOK at it!” I distinctly remember the first time I saw a spiral curl pop up in the back of my hair. I was a sophomore in college and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. My hair was finally cooperating with me.

Nowadays my hair is more wavy than spirally, but I’m blessed to have a daughter with naturally curly hair. I’ll definitely be a life long learner when it comes to curly hair, but through the past few years I’ve learned the best ways to embrace and protect those gorgeous curls. For this post I was thrilled to partner with DevaCurl to share with you the best curly hair care for kids!

We’ve been using DevaCurl for the past two years and we absolutely love their products for our daughter’s hair. I shared our kid’s curly hair routine a few weeks ago and today I want to share with you 7 more tips for curly hair in kids.

My daughter is getting better, but she doesn’t LOVE when I detangle her hair. Though there are ways to make the process easier, so reading if this is you!

7 Curly Hair Care Tips for Kids

#1 Wash Less Often.

This may seem counterintuitive, but you shouldn’t shampoo your curly hair often! Shampooing curly hair too frequently can actually make it dry and dull.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, women with textured hair should shampoo it once a week because this type of hair is more fragile and prone to damage when wet.

You may also want to consider co-washing. This is one of the reasons we always use DevaCurl’s No-Poo Decadence. It’s not your typical shampoo. You don’t get the same bubbly lather, but you will get a product that gently cleanses and adds moisture to curls without stripping away the natural oils.

#2 The Art of Detangling!

Curls can tangle easily, but there are things you can do to reduce knots. First, you should never detangle the curls dry. Second, you must get the DevaCurl Wash Day Wonder.

I’ll be honest and tell you I had my doubts. Could this really make our wash day routine faster? Easier? It exceeded my expectations. You use this before you cleanse and it helps detangle curls quickly. I was amazed at it instantly removed knots and added a silky texture to our daughter’s hair. It made detangling so much easier!

We used the wash day wonder before the no-poo. After the no-poo we put in a generous amount of decadence conditioner. Handfuls!

After the conditioner sat for a few minutes I did more detangling. Do not wash out the conditioner before you detangle. This helps smooth out the hair and makes it so much more manageable.

Now let’s talk about brushing. Brushing is somewhat controversial. Many people say don’t ever brush curls, instead use your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Others say they can’t live without the Wet Brush. We have used both, but prefer the Wet Brush.

We only comb through our daughter’s hair on wash day, which is twice a week. The other days we use our fingers with a spray bottle of water and more conditioner to detangle.

# 3 Try Protective Styling

In between washes you may want to try protective styling. I’m not the BEST braider so I’ve found banding a lot easier and more manageable. See the photo below for an example. I also notice a huge difference in the amount of tangles when we use protective styling.

Another positive of hair banding is it stretches out the curl naturally without heat. Our daughter always talks about wanting long hair, but with curl shrinkage this is difficult.

So with banding she can see the length of her curl. Though the curl definition isn’t as defined with this look. Here is what her hair looks like after taking the banded braid out. We typically leave the bands in for 1 to 2 days.

#4 Limit The Negative Comments

Managing tight curls isn’t always easy. Especially since my daughter’s curls are a lot different than my waves. As parents we often learn as we go and that is okay.

If possible try not to make negative comments when taking care of your child’s curly hair. Right now my daughter doesn’t totally understand her hair is “different,” but as she gets older she will.

I don’t want her to develop a negative complex about her beautiful natural curls! Instead of complaining about how difficult it is to manage her hair I am being intentional about my comments. Instead I often tell her how beautiful her hair curls are!

#5 Analyze Texture and Buy Accordingly

It is important to analyze the texture of your children’s hair and buy products specifically made for their hair type. I know this can be somewhat difficult, but DevaCurl has an awesome quiz to help you figure this out! Take the quiz here

You will find the best results if you treat each individual according to their hair type. My son’s hair is growing very slowly and it doesn’t appear to be as thick right now. We don’t need to use as much conditioner and we it definitely don’t need to do a lot of detangling.

#6 How to Refresh Curls

Our daughter’s hair looks best right after a bath. The curls are defined and she hasn’t rubbed her head in her blankets yet. After a nap the curls can lose some of their shape. Though since using a silk pillowcase it’s gotten better. Definitely worth the investment!

To refresh we always have a spray bottle filled with water on hand. Simply spray the curls and add more conditioner to define the curls again.

You can gently detangle as you do run the conditioner through the length of the curl. If you are in a hurry and don’t have time to redo all the curls, spray and let the hair air dry.

#7 Consider the LOC Method:

The L.O.C. method stands for leave-in conditioner, oil, cream. It’s a step by step process that many women with naturally curly hair use to get the best curl definition.

This method is also supposed to help maximize moisture, which is very important for curly hair. As new parents we were told to put on lotion right after a bath because it’s the best way to hydrate skin and trap moisture. The same is true for curls.

Apply the L.O.C. method right after a bath or shower.

We love using the DevaCurl Leave-In Decadence to moisturize. It’s perfect for weightless silky smooth curls. Then we use Moroccan oil or coconut oil and finish with DevaCurl’s Ultra Defining Gel.

Why We LOVE DevaCurl

I was initially drawn to DevaCurl because their products are 100% sulfate, silicone and paragon free. I wanted to make sure the products we were putting on our daughter’s curls were safe. As I started getting to know the brand better I really connected with their mission. To celebrate unique curls and share with the world how beautiful natural curls are!
